links in blogs and the library now open into a new window
i'm fooling around with the library's what's new and category pages.
pardon the construction :)
added a Find Category function to the Library's What's New page
bug fixed tonight:
when browsing a specific category in the library, some sites were not being listed. (they weren't showing up if tagged with only a single category.)

tonight's work was brought to you by Sphinx. thanks Sphinx! :)
hi all. i'm trying something... each site in the library now has a link to the person who blogged it. try it out and see what you think.

also, blogs should be loading faster :)
hello :) just a quick update on a few significant changes:

- all tags in your blog now go to your reviews, instead of going to the library.

- a new link has been added to get to all your tags; it's under your blog's name.

- you can still get to a library category, by clicking one of your tags first and then clicking the "search library" link that appears.
added category-tag-links to the Library's Category pages. it's much nicer to browse now :)

for example, see how a list of sites leads to other interesting categories:
Museums
just a quick note about creating new categories in the Library --

when you make a new category (let's say Ornithology), it doesn't automatically collect all the sites already tagged Ornithology and put them in the new category.

that ability is coming though! :)
tweaked layout of each category page: formatting the subcategory list in columns
the Library link now goes to Library's Recent Additions page. it's handy :)
I'm excited to announce this experimental feature:
Clicking a tag in your blog pulls up its category in the Library :D
If you accidentally add something to the Library, you can now delete it using the Library's Recent Additions page :)
Added a backlog of about 7,000 sites to the Library :)

Check your favorite categories to see if something new has arrived!
Your blog's "categories" area shows all the latest sites from your favorite categories of the Library.

To pick out your favorites, visit the Library's Main Categories page or Full Index to find categories you're interested in... go inside each category and click "add as favorite". The Recent Additions page may give you some good ideas too :)
Hi :)

The Add to Library / category option has been removed from reviews.

Now, when one of your tags matches a Library category name, the site is automatically added to the Library under that category. Multiple tags = multiple categories (assuming some of them match).

For the time being there will be duplicate sites added to the Library, and the system is not yet retroactive to import your older tagged reviews. Both of these things will be fixed as the upgrade moves forward, so just keep doing what you've been doing :)
The Library now has a Recent Additions page. This is a good feature :D
the Library's Main Categories list and Full Index are now on separate pages
hi everyone :)

thanks for all your questions in the forums, and for adding over 1,000 new categories to the library.

soon i'll be starting to simplify and speed up the library, to make it usable.

problems in category names will all be fixed in the process.

go ahead and experiment with the library in the meantime, if you like -- don't worry, you won't break anything :)

Hi!

Just a reminder:

Adding sites to the Library is easier when "Blog It" automatically opens the Edit Review page for you.

Turn this feature on at the bottom of the Setup page. Then when you add a site to your blog, just type a topic, and the site will be added to the Library as well.

Have fun :)
Removing Categories from Favorites -- just go into the category and click Remove From Favorites :)
"Blog it" now optionally submits sites to the Library.

Favorite Categories page now shows the latest 10 sites submitted to your favorite categories.

EDIT: fixed a new bug in adding subcategories.

EDIT 2: visit the Library and go into a category, then you can add that category as a Favorite :)
The Library now accepts subcategories :) Organization, here we come!
I'm thinking of just a few design criteria for the Library's category system, to keep it as clean, simple and useful as possible.

1. Relatively few top-level categories; Maybe 400 or so.

This means top-level categories will have to be fairly broad, and relate to topics as distinct as possible from each other. It also means most of what you now see in the Library will be subcategories.

2. *Every* category can be a subcategory of something else. Or of multiple something elses.

For example, Airplanes can equally be a subcategory of "Vehicles, "20th Century Inventions", and "Things Manufactured from Aluminum".

Likewise Dogs, which might be a top-level category, could be found under "Domesticated Animals", and "Aids for the Sight-Impaired" as well.

I'll add more criteria as they become clear.

I'd appreciate hearing any issues or critiques you can come up with (thank you already, wiggy :)
i'm considering having tagged sites go directly into the Library... and automatically create new categories as they do so.

this would be a good experiment. mis-categorization becomes a concern, but perhaps there are simpler ways of handling it.
the Library has been promoted to a top-of-the-page link :) new features are coming soon...
Isaac Asimov talks with Bill Moyers about the potential for computers to provide personal education
"Pornography" is included in the Library's categories:

It's important that all material be classified well, so we can find what we're looking for, and *not* run into things we want to avoid.
Thanks for your additions everyone; the Library's categories are coming along nicely. Keep 'em coming! :)

A sneak peek at my new Library front page.
You must be logged in to see it.

Initial categories were created by Xtine66 and are now being extended.
A smaller set of top-level categories is being developed.

You are welcome to add new categories that reflect your interests :)
